SPRUCE UP SHARE TIME + LAST CALL

August 12, 2012 by teacherideafactory

I don’t know about you, but student share time makes me want to barf.  I absolutely loathe it!  However, the kiddos LOVE it, so I fight the urge to jump off a cliff every afternoon and keep it in the daily mix.  Granted, it is a great listening and speaking exercise and a wonderful way to teach questions, but that doesn’t make the endless stream of bug-eyed Littlest Pet Shop figurines and ratty stuffed animals any easier for me πŸ™‚

It was these feelings that led me to the creation of my latest packet – Sprucin’ Up Share Time.  My thought was and is that maybe . . . just maybe . . . I will like share time a little bit more if I can squeeze some more academics out of it. So, I created a series of writing activities aligned with the first grade common core standards for listening/speaking and writing.  Here’s a little peak at what’s inside the packet . . .

From persuasive writing and narrative stories to question writing and compliments, this packet offers up a little bit of everything in the writing department.

And, although these were specifically aligned to meet the first grade common core standards, these activities have also been differentiated to meet the academic needs of second grade classrooms (multiple templates of most activities are included)!  CLICK HERE to take a closer look.

Now . . . on to Pen Pals.  This is my LAST CALL as I will close up the google doc this evening around 6-ish (Pacific Time).  Most everyone should have received their email.  If you didn’t, hold tight for me and don’t worry . . . you are still in the pile.  I had to hold on to a handful of potential matches to ensure any late entries had partners. If you haven’t heard from me by Tuesday . . . then come after me πŸ™‚

I do need some help on a few people/classrooms.  Does anyone know of someone who might want to take on . . .

  1. I have a pre-kinder classroom in NY?  The teacher says they have a fantastic program.
  2. I need to find a match for a kinder class overseas.
  3. I need resource teachers with smaller classes (7-13) in the primary grades!  OR . . . K-1 teachers willing to take on a resource class.
  4. I have been searching for a Christian School teacher in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th who is willing to take on a 3rd grade Christian School in CA.
  5. Amanda Bley . . . your email keeps bouncing back . . . HELP!

If you want to squeak in under the wire and have me try to find you a pen pal, click on the button below to read more about it.

Finally, if you missed out on the Pen Pal Parent Permission Slip freebie yesterday, I added it below so you don’t have to click all over the place πŸ™‚

CLICK HERE to snag your copy.
If you need it to say “country” instead of “state,” email me!

Well, that’s it folks.  Don’t forget about the MONDO sale going on over at TPT. Everything in my store is 20% off and TPT is offering up another 10% when you enter their special code (see button below).  Thanks friends.  See you soon.

Ugh I loathe share time too. I don't mind if it's something educational, like postcards from another country or an old coin. But a Hello Kitty keychain just ain't gonna cut it! Thanks for a fresh idea!

Ha ha! I feel the same way. That's why I stopped doing sharing a couple of years ago. They're only allowed to bring something in to show if they made it or it's extremely educational or it's a pet (I LOVE pets). That means I only get something maybe once or twice a month. I figure they do enough sharing during the day with authors circle, etc., that they don't really need this time … that's how I justify my choice :))

No fair . . . you get to have pets come in??? We never have been able to do that! Well, except for last year for a few days. We had a new admin team take over and I kept letting my kiddos bring dogs and hamsters in . . . then, I got caught . . . whoops . . . I played dumb . . . hehehehehe πŸ™‚

I actually use show and tell as a reward that they can earn from their punch cards. Most kids would rather play a game on the iPad or use ink pens for the days, so not much sharing going on in my room. πŸ™‚

    You crack me up!

I love your idea about sprucing up Share Time. =)

I have had kiddos bring in something special and they then had to write about it during Writing Workshop. =)

I know it's past the deadline, but if you are having trouble matching everyone up and need an extra class, I would love to do this. I have 7 students – They are special ed students. I would love to participate if you have room!

    Thanks!
