PRONOUN PATCH BULLETIN BOARD IDEA

Spring is in the air and pronouns are headed our way.  Although we have touched on this grammar concept a bit already, it’s time to really get to know pronouns and how they work.  With this said, I have a handful of ideas to liven up our pronoun studies and weave in a bit of springtime flavor.

PRONOUN PATCH

I am going to get ahead of myself a bit here and put the craft first. What can I say?  The Pronoun Patch is always a class favorite.  You can run with this one of two ways and it’s pretty explanatory either way you roll.  One version is to invite students write a pronoun in the center of a large colored circle.  They then write related nouns on paper ovals (petals).  These are all attached to a paper stem and leaves to create a pronoun flower.  I used the paper cutter and die-cut machine to prep these for years (see below).

It took me about six years, but I finally got smart and made a printable version that I just copy and the kids cut.  But, I didn’t stop there.  I wanted to up the ante in the pronoun department.  Why have students only practice one pronoun when you can have them practice multiple pronouns?  Yep. It just makes sense to push the envelope a bit more when you can.  This leads me to the second example.  All of the elements are printable, but there is a two-petal option that invites kids come up with corresponding nouns for a handful of the most common pronouns (see photo below).  If you are looking for easy-prep printable to toss at your kiddos, check out my pronoun craft.
These flowers look delightful hung in a window or on a bulletin board.  The kids love creating a Pronoun Patch for the classroom . . . and I love that it’s a craft that’s still standards based.

GUIDED TO INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Let me back up here a bit and talk a bit about the pronoun lessons we tackle before the craft. (I told you I was out of order.) A few whole class shared pronoun experiences go a long way to mastering the concept.  We always begin by replacing nouns in sentences.  It’s a no-brainer and the kids really start to get it.  We are copying sentences too which helps sneak in a bit of additional writing practice too!  Check out the pic on the top right – Perfect Pronouns. Next we transition into looking at words out of context.  (See the Pleasing Pronouns picture on the top left.)  Finally, we slip into some independent practice in center rotations with Pronoun Little Books.  This one gets ya two for one to boot.  Not only are they practicing pronouns, but they are writing sentences. You may choose to provide the noun to work into the first sentence or you may let your students draft their own sentences.  Either way, they round out each mini book page by re-writing the sentence using the appropriate pronoun in place of the noun.  See the photo on the bottom left.

A PRONOUN SONG!  Ron Brown’s Intelli-Tunes has the most magical tune that goes with this concept.  It really helps make pronouns stick with the kids as they sing the chorus constantly!  See what I mean by taking a little listen below . . .

PRONOUN POWER

To round out pronoun practice, I always like to toss a little wearable work into the mix. If a student can slap something on his/her body, engagement tends to go through the roof in the primary grades.  With this said, I decided to create a funky pronoun headband for my kiddos to complete and wear home.  It has a fun spring theme and a bit of hippy flair.  These can be easily made with sentence strips and a few quick pronoun strip templates (see photo below).  If you’re looking to just print and go, check out my version of the pronoun headband.
